Many women suffer from frequent urinary tract infections (UTI). Nearly 20 percent of women who have a UTI will have another, and 30 percent of those will have yet another. Of the last group, 80 percent will have recurrences.
Urinary Tract Infections are the second most common type of infection affecting women all around the world. Research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) suggests that one factor behind recurrent Urinary Tract Infections may be the ability of bacteria to attach to cells lining the urinary tract.
Not everyone with a Urinary Tract Infection has symptoms. Here are some symptoms which may suggest an impending UTI
-frequent urge to urinate
-painful, burning feeling during urination
-pain even when not urinating
-uncomfortable pressure above the pubic bone
-an overall feeling of being tired, shaky, or washed out
Most UTIs are most commonly treated with antibacterial drugs, which usually provide relief in just a few days. However, severely ill patients with kidney infections may be hospitalized until they can take fluids and needed drugs on their own. Kidney infections generally require several weeks of antibiotic treatment. There are several over the counter medications to help treat the symptoms of a UTI as well.
Doctors suggest some additional steps that a woman can take on her own to avoid an infection:
* Drink plenty of water every day.
* Urinate when you feel the need; don’t resist the urge to urinate.
* Wipe from front to back to prevent bacteria around the anus from entering the vagina or urethra.
* Take showers instead of tub baths.
* Cleanse the genital area before sexual intercourse.
* Avoid using feminine hygiene sprays and scented douches, which may irritate the urethra.
* Some doctors suggest drinking cranberry juice or taking a cranberry supplement such as
Cranberry Juice 100 Caps
